A note from our Film Manager:
Dear Patrons,
I am so grateful for the last two years of work as the Film Manager at our beloved Civic Theatre of Allentown. Programming films for this community has been a blessing, and I have truly enjoyed the privilege of bringing over 130 films to a cinema that I first attended as a student at Muhlenberg College. Thank you for traveling to the screen with open minds and hearts, and allowing the transformative power of film to be a part of your lives.
In 2015, I travelled to Germany to visit family, and attended an independent cinema in Munich that had a special tradition of showing a film each month with no announcement, other than to advertise that a movie would be shown and the time. The cinema was sold out, as patrons eagerly awaited the surprise film. This is how I saw Todd Haynes' CAROL for the first time, an event that I remember as one of my most memorable moviegoing experiences.
For my final film screening as the Civic's Film Manager, I would like to try to recreate this scenario for you, choosing a favorite film from the past two years of programming to show as a surprise free screening, along with a few short films I Iove that are in conversation with the film.
Expect a film that defies genre, has urgent and relevant questions, and is quiet at first, but ultimately revelatory.
