Civic Cinema is navigating a period of unexpected transition, and we want to keep our community informed.

A Temporary Pause for Cinema

The cinema screen in Civic’s Historic 19th Street Theatre, which our community has enjoyed for more than 40 years, is currently out of commission due to mechanical malfunctions. We’re exploring repair and replacement options, but restoring the screen will be a significant undertaking.

Meanwhile, our fall production, In Tandem: The Salacious Sins of Sister Cuthberta & Sheep!, runs September 11–20 in Theatre514, making our primary cinema space unavailable for film programming during the run.

We had planned to temporarily move cinema programming to the 19th Street Theatre, so the timing of the screen failure has been especially disappointing.

A Time of Transition

Our cinema team is experiencing a major transition. Our Film Manager, Stefan, has decided to step down from his role at Civic. Stefan’s impact went far beyond the screen, he truly did it all for our community. We are profoundly grateful for the dedication he showed in every part of his work. Whether he was selecting our weekly film lineups, working behind the scenes, or crafting specialty themed cocktails for everyone in the patron lounge, Stefan nurtured a genuine sense of community at Civic. While his absence is deeply felt, we are so thankful for the warmth and energy he brought to our spaces every single day.

Looking Ahead

With the screen repairs, our theatre schedule, and this transition within our cinema team, film programming will look a little different in the coming weeks.

We know how much cinema means to our community, and we’re disappointed that we can’t offer our regular film schedule right now. We’re exploring our options and working toward bringing cinema back to the big screen as soon as we can.

Our hope is to be back up and running in time for our beloved annual Holiday Films Series. We’ll keep you updated as we work through the repairs and plan for the return of regular cinema programming.
