The Diary of Anne Frank comes to Civic Theatre514 in an intimate, carefully staged production that underscores the enduring importance of this landmark work.
Originally written for the stage by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, the play was reworked in 1997 by Wendy Kesselman on behalf of the Anne Frank Fonds. Kesselman’s adaptation draws more directly from Anne Frank’s original diary, incorporating additional published passages and restoring elements of her voice, placing Anne’s perspective more fully at the center while deepening the historical context.
Set during World War II, the play follows Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl in hiding with her family and others in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Through her diary, she records the realities of fear, confinement, and resilience, offering one of the most widely read firsthand accounts of life under persecution during the Holocaust.
Presented in Civic’s intimate Theatre514 space with a sparse, focused design, this production emphasizes text and performance, allowing Anne’s words to resonate with clarity and immediacy. The staging creates a direct connection to a story that remains urgently relevant.
